BASKETBALL: Scottie Wilbekin still suspended, probably out vs. Wisconsin
Whatever Scottie Wilbekin did, it is about to cost him his third game.
Gators coach Billy Donovan suspended Wilbekin indefinitely prior to the season opener last week and has not set a timetable for his return. Florida posted on its website that it is a four-game suspension, but took that down. A spokesman for the program said the suspension is indefinite.
Donovan said Wilbekin, his starting point guard, is highly unlikely to play when No. 10 Florida hosts No. 23 Wisconsin on Wednesday (7 p.m., ESPN2).
Donovan suspended him last Thursday morning, just 30 minutes before the team left for its schedule season opener aboard the U.S.S. Bataan. As of Sunday, they had not discussed his situation.
“I’m gonna find out a lot more,” Donovan said after his team crushed Alabama State 84-35. “I have not met with him since we’ve been back. I saw him briefly to say hello to him, but I have not spoken to him at all. There’s still information I have to gather.
“As of right now, I am not playing him against Wisconsin. I’m not — unless some of the things I’m able to find out this week can change (his status). As of today, he will not play against Wisconsin.”
Wilbekin is allowed to use the team facility, but cannot practice. He did not travel with the team to the U.S.S. Bataan and was not on the bench Sunday.
During Saturday’s practice, Wilbekin worked out separately from the team with an assistant coach, then hit the weight room on his own.
“I still want to reach out to him, and he’s still part of our team and our family,” Donovan said. “But as it relates to having him around, I just don’t think it’s good for him to be around as we’re trying to get prepared on a one-day turnaround from Friday to Sunday.”
Donovan did not say whether Wilbekin would return to practice today, though it seems unlikely he will work with the team until he is playing again.
If it does turn out to be a four-game suspension, Wilbekin will be out Wednesday and miss Sunday’s game against Middle Tennessee State in Tampa. He would be back Nov. 20 to face Savannah State.
