BASKETBALL: Starting lineup mostly set; one spot TBD
Billy Donovan is not going to name his starters this early in the year, but there are some positions that appear to be solidified.
When the Gators open the season against Georgetown on Nov. 9, they are like to have Scottie Wilbekin at point guard and Kenny Boynton at shooting guard. Patric Young is the starting center. Erik Murphy appears to have the power forward job.
Boynton, Young and Murphy are proven veterans. Wilbekin has been in line to succeed Erving Walker at point guard since last year. No surprises there, though technically none of those spots are 100 percent locked up.
“To me, guys starting and not starting can be a direct impact of what happens that week,” Donovan said. “If all of the sudden you just name the guys that are starting, what happens when you do that and all of the sudden someone else performs better, someone else gets hurt, someone else is not there? I’ve never been a big believer in just naming ‘these are our starters.’”
He conceded, though, that “there’s gonna be some process of elimination,” and mentioned Young, Wilbekin, Boynton and Murphy.
The other forward/guard position is the question mark.
For UF’s exhibition game Thursday against Nebraska-Kearney, the basketball program lists these probable starters:
Erik Murphy, F Patric Young, C Kenny Boynton, G Mike Rosario, G Scottie Wilbekin, G
Donovan’s man decision seems to be whether to go with Rosario or Casey Prather. There are also times when Will Yeguete breaks into the lineup, which could realign the choices at other positions as Donovan makes sure he has all the necessary pieces on the court.
“To say that that’s the starting lineup for the year– it could be in some games,” Donovan said. “It may not be in other games. (Rosario) earned it. He’s done well. That’s not to say that Will or Casey didn’t earn starting, because those guys have done a good job as well. But I thought it was important to keep Mike on the right track.”
