Florida piles up penalties for third straight week in 17-9 loss to Georgia
The Gators turned down an opportunity to hold a major advantage in penalty yards. Georgia, which won 17-9, picked up 14 flags for 132 yards, but Florida mitigated that somewhat with 10 penalties of its own for 95 yards.
Penalties have been a constant problem for the Gators during coach Will Muschamp’s two seasons. They were flagged 7.7 times per game in 2011. Only seven teams were worse.
Florida entered the Georgia game as the second-most penalized team in the SEC in terms of yardage at 66 per game.
Here are the Gators’ penalties from Saturday:
– Personal fouls: Jaylen Watkins, Xavier Nixon (unenforced due to off-setting Georgia penalty), Matt Elam.
– False starts: Nixon, Chaz Green.
– Defensive holding: Dominique Easley.
– Facemask: Leon Orr.
– Two 12-men-on-the-field penalties. CBS’ camera caught Muschamp screaming at TE Clay Burton after one of them.
– Two holds on punt returns where the offending player was not identified.
“A couple of the upperclassmen, we know how this game goes,” Watkins said. “It got too bad where the refs were calling flags every time we talked or something. It was a little wild out there.”
Muschamp said he was pleased with his team’s composure and declined to comment on the officiating. When pressed for his thoughts on Easley’s defensive holding, which occurred in the fourth quarter behind the line of scrimmage and kept alive a Georgia touchdown drive, he declined even more forcefully.
“I have zero comment on that one,” he said
Muschamp has been harping on penalty issues for at least three weeks now.
The problem existed all season. The only game in which Florida was under 50 yards in penalties was Week 2 against Texas A&M. In the past three weeks, the Gators had 80 vs. Vanderbilt, 74 vs. South Carolina and 95 vs. Georgia.
“Penalties really killed us,” DT Omar Hunter said Saturday. “We’ve got to do better on penalties. Just keeping composure. Not everything’s going to go your way. Keep yourself composed. It’s just tough.
“The whole team lost control of themselves. Myself, personally, for not grabbing a younger guy that lost his composure. It’s the whole team.”
