Florida DE Ronald Powell has another surgery on injured knee
One of the few negative signs for the Gators during last weekend’s 14-6 win over LSU was the sight of DE Ronald Powell on crutches. Powell, who tore the ACL in his right knee, also was wearing an extensive brace on his leg.
Florida issued a statement saying Powell had a “revision” on the injury and offered no other details.
“He had a little bit of a repair on the tear,” Gators coach Will Muschamp said. “Should be fine.”
Powell originally injured his knee in the spring game, and Muschamp was optimistic he would play at some point this season. The initial recovery estimates indicate he might have been back right around now. Instead, he will miss the season and attempt to return in 2013 as a red-shirt junior.
He figured to be an essential piece of Florida’s defense this season after leading the team with six sacks last year. In his two seasons, Powell played 25 games and started 13, had 57 tackles and seven sacks.
This is at least his second setback. A month ago he reinjured his knee while rehabilitating it, and Muschamp said “as accelerated as his rehab has gone, talking to him this morning and his parents throughout the weekend, more than likely Ronald will red-shirt this year.
“It’s just disappointing for him, a guy that mentally has been a rock. It’s been amazing how he’s handled the process and he’s handling it again very well.”
